How to connect to a VPN server from an iPhone or iPad

In most cases, when we connect to the Internet we do it directly, that is, we connect directly to a router and, from there, to the web or server that we want to visit. While this is right for private and secure networks, when we connect to the Internet from public or untrusted networks, it is necessary to apply a number of additional protection measures so that our data can travel safely and encrypted from our device To the server, and vice versa.

iphone1200x628v3One of the techniques used for this is to configure a VPN connection so that our device establishes a private and encrypted connection between our device (for example, an iPad or iPhone with iOS) and the server (either external or configured, example,

There are several applications that allow us to establish this type of connections from our device, and, in addition, there are several different protocols for these virtual private connections. Next, we'll explain how we can configure a VPN connection from our iPhone or iPad with the iOS operating system taking advantage of the default tool included in the operating system.

How to configure the connection to a VPN server from iOS

IOS defaults to a tool within the settings menu of the operating system that allows us to easily configure VPN connections in our device through the three most used protocols without the need to install any additional software.

The protocols that allow us to configure iOS are:

  • IKEv2
  • IPSec
  • L2TP

To do this, all we have to do is open our iOS configuration menu and select the " General " menu on the left side of the screen. In this menu we will see a series of configuration options, but, if we move towards the bottom, we will find the section that interests us: VPN.

iOS-Settings-General-VPN-AddVPNConfiguration

Click on it and we will see a new menu where the different connections configured or if there is none, a button from which to add our own connection.

We click on it and we can see a section where we will have to configure the data of our connection.

The first thing that we will have to choose will be the type of VPN connection that we are going to configure. To do this, click on " Type " and we will see the three protocols mentioned above.

We choose the protocol that we are going to use and we will go back to its configuration. Depending on the chosen protocol, some options that we will see below may vary.

Next, we will fill in the VPN server configuration data requested by the application, which will mainly be:

  • Description: A descriptive name for our connection.
  • Server: The IP address or domain of the server to which we are going to connect.
  • User: The user with which we are going to log in to the server.
  • Password: The password of the previous user.
  • Certificate: In the case of using a digital certificate, we must import it here.

Once the data has been entered (generally the VPN server should give us all this information) we can see how the server already appeared in the empty list that we saw earlier.

To connect to it, all we have to do is activate the status switch that appears and enter, for security, the password of our user to connect.

After a few seconds, the connection will be established and we will be navigating safely through the server. In case you want to see a summary about the server that we have configured, or simply delete that profile, we can easily do so by clicking on the "i" icon that appears next to it.

In this way, whenever we are going to connect to the Internet from public networks or dubious trust, we will be ensuring our traffic and preventing it from being captured and analyzed by hackers.

In case you want to connect through the VPN protocol, as iOS is not supported by default with it, we will have to download the official OpenVPN client from iTunes (it's free) and configure our connection from it.
