KickassTorrents, most popularly known as Kat.cr was world’s most popular torrent sharing website from quite some time. It had about 50 million unique page visitors per month and ended up in position of top 70 in Alexa ranking. The website had estimated distribution of over $1 billion pirated content.

Well, it seems that the U.S government didn’t like the progress. The 30 years old owner and founder of website Artem Vaulin from Ukraine was arrested in Poland by U.S police. Police also seized all domains of kickassTorrents leading to the biggest torrent sharing website go down.

The US department of Homeland Security used the reverse DNS lookup method to get IP address of all Kickass Torrents domains. They found out that two of Kickass domains were hosted from U.S, which was the easiest place for U.S police to catch Vaulin.

Further from WHOIS database, police found the email address of Vaulin ‘[email protected]’ which he used for KAT related activities. Which by surprise was also the email address which Vaulin used for his Apple account. ’Tirm’ is another name used by Vaulin. From Apple, Police found out that the same email address was used to make some iTune purchases.

Further IP address logs were analyzed to find out the IP address. Facebook then provided the data that confirmed that the same IP address was used to log into KAT’s Facebook page.

Any KickassTorrents Alternative?

For now the Kat.cr is not accessible but there is an website dxtorrent.com which claims to be clone of Kickass Torrent. It looks similar to kickass torrent and has already became favorite among Kickass follower.

The clone site has filed a petition on change.org which claims that the arrest of Vaulin is attack on ‘Internet rights’ of user. It also adds "Our freedom to share is the human right which Artem Vaulin has been providing to millions of users"
